2. Pompeii
Pompeii is the ruins of a partially buried Roman city-state near Naples, Italy, in what is now Campania, a colony of the Pompei commune. In 79 AD, the volcano Vesuvius here erupted resulting in more than 2,000 deaths and the whole city was covered in ashes. It was not until 1784 that people discovered this ancient citadel.
