12. Basilica of St. Peter
Basilica of St. Peter's Church, located in the center of the Vatican, is the most important and holiest church in the Catholic world.
This is the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church and is also the largest church in the world with an area of about 22,300 square meters.
People built the Basilica on the foundation of St. Ancient Peter, in a position believed to be right above the grave of Saint Peter - one of the 12 apostles of Jesus.
The building was built in 1506 during the reign of Pope Julius II and has undergone several design changes. By 1626, the new Cathedral was completed.
Basilica of St. Peter's is considered "the greatest of Catholic churches even though this is not the mother church of the Roman Catholic Church, nor is it the Cathedral of the Diocese of Rome.
Not only does it impress with the Renaissance architecture on the outside, the inside of the Cathedral is also decorated with many sophisticated artistic frescoes, mosaics, and reliefs.
Many statues of great historical value are displayed here, including the Pietà statue, also known as the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows.
