10 candidates for the 2024 Ballon d'Or

According to British newspaper Sportmail, after the Euro and Copa America competitions ended, Lionel Messi, Lamine Yamal, and Rodri are now leading the race for the 2024 Ballon d'Or. The Ballon d'Or was first created by France Football magazine in 1956. This year, UEFA has teamed up with Group Amaury, which owns France Football and L'Équipe, to jointly organize the Ballon d'Or starting in 2024. This new partnership aims to make the award more respected and known around the world. The 2024 Ballon d'Or ceremony will happen on October 28 at the Châtelet Theatre in Paris, France.

1. Toni Kroos

Toni Kroos had a fantastic farewell at the club level, winning the treble of La Liga, the Spanish Super Cup, and the Champions League while playing for Real Madrid. However, the 34-year-old midfielder and the German national team were knocked out by Spain in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024. This early exit from the home tournament has put Kroos at a disadvantage in the race for the Ballon d'Or.

2. Erling Haaland

Erling Haaland's performance has slowed down in the 2023-2024 season, but he still scored 27 goals and won the Premier League Golden Boot. The Norwegian striker is now one of just six players to win this award in back-to-back years. He joins the list of stars like Alan Shearer, Thierry Henry, Robin van Persie, Harry Kane, and Mohamed Salah. However, Haaland's chances for personal awards have been affected because the Norwegian national team isn't playing in Euro 2024.

3. Phil Foden

assists and 19 goals in 35 games. His performances were key to Manchester City winning their fourth straight Premier League title, which also made him the top player in the league. But he hasn't scored or provided assists in seven matches during the Euro Championship, which could make it harder for him to win the Ballon d'Or.

4. Kylian Mbappe

Kylian Mbappe scored 44 goals and gave ten assists in 48 games. He helped Paris Saint-Germain win three major French titles: the French Cup, Ligue 1, and the French Super Cup. He then moved to Real Madrid without paying any money. But Mbappe isn’t expected to win the Ballon d'Or because he didn’t do very well at Euro 2024. He only scored one penalty and provided one assist in the tournament.

5. Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi is on the list of nominees for the Ballon d'Or after Argentina won the Copa America 2024 title again, even though he scored just one goal in the tournament. At his club, Inter Miami, the 37-year-old has scored 14 goals and given 11 assists in 15 games this season.

6. Lamine Yamal

Lamine Yamal has attracted a lot of attention because he set several records at Euro 2024. He is the youngest player to ever play, make an assist, score a goal, reach a final, help his team in a final, and win the tournament. At just 17 years old, he scored one goal, made four assists, and was named the best young player of the competition. However, Barcelona's season without any major trophies makes it harder for Yamal to win the Ballon d'Or.

7. Dani Carvajal

Dani Carvajal is the only player named who has won both the Champions League and an international tournament. He is one of three Real Madrid players in Spain’s Euro 2024 squad, along with Nacho and Joselu, who are both on the bench. So, if the Ballon d'Or looks at team success, the 32-year-old defender is a strong contender.

8. Jude Bellingham

Jude Bellingham had an amazing first season with Real Madrid. He scored 23 goals and set up 12 more goals in 42 games. His performances helped the team win important matches in La Liga, the Spanish Super Cup, and the Champions League. At just 20 years old, Bellingham was probably one of the top contenders for the Ballon d'Or if England had beaten Spain in the Euro 2024 final. Even though that didn’t happen, Bellingham still has a good chance to become the first British player to win the Ballon d'Or since Michael Owen in 2001.

9. Rodri

Rodri is just as important for Spain as he is for Pep Guardiola's Manchester City, because both teams want to win Euro 2024 and the Premier League. In the past 16 months, Rodri has only lost once, and that was when Manchester City lost to Manchester United in the FA Cup final. He's been named the best player in Euro 2024, which has made him a strong contender for the Ballon d'Or.

10. Vinicius

Vinicius scored six goals and helped his team win the Champions League, including a goal in the 2-0 final against Dortmund. He also scored 15 goals in 28 games in La Liga. However, Brazil's early exit from the Copa America made it harder for the 24-year-old to win the Ballon d'Or for the first time.

According to Bet365, Vinicius is the top choice for the 2024 Ballon d'Or, with odds of 6/4 (bet 4 to win 6).
Other players in the rankings are Rodri at 2/1, Jude Bellingham at 5/1, Dani Carvajal at 8/1, Lamine Yamal at 12/1, and Lionel Messi at 16/1.
