10. Portuguese Tricana Poveira
he Tricana Poveira is the traditional dress of Portuguese women in the city of Póvoa de Varzim. Created between the 1920s and 1960s, the outfit consists of a lace blouse, a colorful skirt, an apron, a scarf, and high-heeled shoes with shiny soles.
The inspiration for the outfit comes from the fishermen's beachwear, with its navy blue collar. However, the design was also favored by shoe shine girls, carpenters, and craftsmen, adding color to the Tricana Poveira.
The Tricana Poveira was the fashion of middle-class teenagers in Póvoa before ready-made clothing became popular in the 1970s. However, poor fishermen also enjoyed wearing it, even from cheap fabrics in bold colors. Today, the Tricana is often seen in cultural and festive activities, especially the Rusgas de São Pedro parade. The characteristic colors of each costume today represent personal style and usually belong to 6 color pairs: blue – brim, green – white, white – red, yellow – red, blue – white and green – red.
