3. Taiwan
Taiwan is ranked the third safest place in the world, behind Qatar (number one) and the United Arab Emirates (number two), thanks to its low crime rate of 15.46%. Taipei is tied with Singapore as the fifth safest holiday destination in the world. Violent crime is extremely low, and theft is uncommon. Because of the 24-hour dining culture, most streets and sidewalks are safe at night, even for women. Many young people, Taiwanese and foreigners alike, can be seen drinking in parks until sunrise.
Public spaces in Taiwan are also quite safe. Pickpockets can appear at major festivals or night markets, but these cases are extremely rare. Public transportation, such as intercity trains, the Taipei Metro (MRT) line or city buses, is also very safe. The emergency numbers in Taiwan are 110 for police, 119 for fire department or ambulance, 113 for domestic violence or sexual assault, and there is also a toll-free English-language foreigner service hotline at 0800-024-111.
